JUDO
Judo was founded in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jigoro
Kano, who envisioned it as a way of becoming physically
and mentally fit through disciplined training. Designed
so that it can be practiced by people of all ages
and physical capacities, Judo is a system of self-defense,
a physical and mental discipline, and is also an
Olympic sport. Judo does not involve kicking and
striking techniques; instead, it teaches the efficient
use of movement, balance, and leverage to execute
throwing, grappling, and other techniques. Skill,
technique, and timing are the essential ingredients
for success in Judo rather than brute strength.
Sensei Martin emphasizes excellence through disciplined
training, good sportsmanship, and fair play at all
times. |

JUJITSU
This method of self-defense allows control over
one's attacker(s) in a wide variety of situations
through the use of leverage, pressure points, momentum,
and joint locks. In addition to the basic techniques,
Sensei Martin teaches specific techniques designed
to help students take advantage of his or her natural
physical attributes and capability in order to attain
and maintain control. |

HANBO
Jodo or "hanbo", is the Japanese art of
stick fighting that originated as jojutsu (long
stick fighting). Students practice with a "bo"
or "jo", performing 12 basic blocks and
blows. Moves are practiced in sets called "katas"
instead of by randori as in judo. The katas are
used to familiarize the participant with offensive
and defensive maneuvers to be used against an attacker. |
